reinventing and moving forward

Life as a small independent and creative entrepreneur.

Sometimes I wonder if there's a manual out there titled: "How to stay upright as a small independent creative without your brain going into overdrive?"
My head just keeps going, day and night. Apparently it doesn't know the word stop 🤪

As a creative entrepreneur, I never stand still. I can't. It's a constant dance of testing, trying, playing, experimenting — and yes, occasionally swearing quite loudly. Figuring out what resonates, what doesn't, what aligns with my own story, and what truly connects with my customers.

Don't get me wrong: life as a small creative independent is also really beautiful. There's freedom, there's experimentation, there's the joy of shaping each day yourself. But behind the scenes there's also a constant movement: the ongoing reinvention of yourself and your work. The search for how to stay true to my identity, my style, my story — without betraying myself — while still reaching enough people who genuinely connect with what I make.

For me, staying true to my style also means I don't just "commercialize" everything; I choose paths that respect both the artistic value and the unique visual language of my work.

So I keep experimenting. Finding new forms, trying out ideas, discovering ways to let my creativity flow — and yes, also to make it sustainable.

Only making personal artwork? If only it were that simple.

In an ideal world, I'd live off my free work alone. I'd make what I feel, create what feels right, and people would line up from here all the way to Lisbon to buy it 😅😂

But reality is a bit more nuanced.
And that's okay. It pushes me to be more creative than "just making art." It invites my imagination to move between personal work, commissions, applied pieces, and new products I never planned to make — but that suddenly make perfect sense.

From cards to card subscriptions.

Selling cards? I'd been doing that for years.
But at some point I thought: "Why wouldn't people just want to receive a little package of cards in their mailbox on a regular basis?"

Everyone loves surprises, right? And mail. And cards that feel just a bit more personal than what you find in the average shop.

And that's how my card subscriptions were born. A small idea that suddenly gave a whole new rhythm to something I'd been making for years.

From stacks of graphite-watercolors to unique notebooks.

And then there are my graphite-watercolors. They pile up like quiet witnesses of my creativity 🤪

Until I discovered they could be perfectly turned into unique notebooks — little treasures where each piece gets a second life.

What once felt like "too much" suddenly became "just enough" to create something different, something new, something playful.

And then there are my little darlings.

Small art with a big heart.

Original, handmade watercolors on MDF blocks: colorful, playful, a little cheeky… totally me. You can easily display them, hang them up, or tuck them between books and plants — they find their place effortlessly. Each piece has its own character, giving you that immediate feeling: this one has a story.

Mini artworks that instantly bring atmosphere and always put a smile on someone's face when given as a gift.

Falling, getting up, swearing, and carrying on

Sometimes entrepreneurship is just:

  • trying something,

  • hoping it works,

  • realizing it doesn't,

  • comforting yourself with a glass of wine 🤪

  • and then trying again.

But that's exactly where the magic lies. That I don't have to be stuck in one form. That I can grow, shift, change.

That I can laugh at myself and feel proud when something unexpectedly clicks.

The most important thing remains: keep doing what feels right for me — while also finding ways to bring my clients along into that universe.

Because in the end, it's all about connection. And that often happens exactly where my own uniqueness meets your curiosity.

And now… the end of the year

While I keep searching, experimenting, and reinventing myself, things emerge that might also become a little bright spot for someone else.

  • A print or a set of cards that makes someone smile.

  • A notebook where a new story can begin.

  • A Schattigaard that finds just the right spot.

Now that the holiday season is approaching, I notice people are looking for exactly that: something unique, something small, something with a story.

What grows from my sketches, brainstorms, experiments, and "let's try that one more time" moments can easily find a place under someone's Christmas tree 😉
Not because it has to, but because it feels right.
Because my creativity only feels complete when it can land in someone else's hands.
