Presenting my work in a solo exhibition is a special milestone for me. The title I chose, 'Stories in Transit,' captures everything that inspires me, my working process, and my artistic vision.
The Inspiration: The City and Me, Moving Together
Lisbon is my great muse. For me, it is much more than a city; it is a constant source of stories and inspiration. Lisbon breathes life and narratives – in every winding street, in every glance at the Tagus, and in the people moving through the city. As I wander through Lisbon myself, I let myself be carried away by fleeting moments that want to be captured.
My work begins with observation. While riding the tram, having lunch, or looking out my window, I notice the small, spontaneous moments that bring life color: a conversation between strangers, a pensive glance, the way light falls on a façade. Each moment carries a story within it. My role is to capture that story and translate it into my own graphic, associative style – often with a touch of humor.
Techniques: Graphite Watercolor and Mixed Media
One of the media I keep returning to is my graphite-watercolor, a product of Portuguese craftsmanship. I love the immediacy of watercolor and the subtle grain of this material. It almost feels as if the medium itself tells a story – something that fits perfectly with my work.
In my most recent pieces, I have become freer in my experimentation. I paint on self-prepared supports and increasingly combine graphite-watercolor with mixed media and textiles. This exploration of new techniques reflects my personal journey as an artist.
During a burnout, I felt trapped in my own head. At that time, there was only space for small works, quick results, and techniques I already mastered – no surprises. As I gradually rediscovered myself and began to experience more calm, space for experimentation returned. I now dare to move more freely and follow whatever arises within me. This process is evident in my newest works: they are layered and liberated. Even my presentation and frames play a role, forming an integral part of the pieces themselves.
The Works: Graphic with a Touch of Humor
Stories in Transit is not only about capturing what I see, but also about how I interpret it. I am a natural draftsman. The graphic aspect of my work comes both from my training and from growing up around my father's printing business. From a young age, I learned how images and designs come together. This attention to composition, detail, and storytelling is evident in my work. Humor appears spontaneously and becomes part of a new story.
My associative way of thinking also plays a key role. While observing, new stories constantly form in my mind. A simple scene can evolve into something unexpected, where images and ideas merge and form new connections.
The Exhibition: A Journey Through Stories
During the exhibition, visitors are invited to travel through my world. The works are not only visual moments but also an invitation to pause and reflect on the fleeting and the everyday. What does "transit" mean to you? Which stories do you recognize in mine?
Conclusion
Stories in Transit is more than just a title; it reflects my artistic journey. It represents the temporary, the accidental, and the constant movement of life. While nothing ever remains the same, people often remain caught in habits and routines, searching for stability and certainty. It is precisely this paradox that drives and inspires my work.
This exhibition gives me the opportunity to share my stories and engage in dialogue with others. It shows that life is always in motion, full of stories waiting to be discovered.
